She had torn a shoulder muscle. She had seen a specialist about it and they informed her that it was a very unusual to have such a tear at such a young age. It was normally seen in much older people. The young lady had no idea how it had come about. She could not recall any trauma to the area. Even when she came for a treatment with me she still had no idea. It wasn't until I informed her that I had a similar injury and the position at which my arm was at when it happened, that she clicked as to what could have caused it. Yes, guitar hero the game. One piece of equipment which has brought in some clients is the cross-trainer (also known as the elliptical trainer). It is a stationary exercise machine which simulates walking or running without any impact on the joints. No impact, no injury -right? Not quite, as it seems. Yes, sure there is not pressure on the joints which you would normally get while pounding the pavement but what about the way you have to hold these machines? I have never personally used one myself but just looking at the way these things are designed explains why my clients are suffering. The handle bars are too high and makes the arm swing in an unnatural way, in no way simulating the normal arm swing during walking and running. I would presume that most people using these machines would grip the handles too tightly. Add in the arm swing and do it for a prolonged period. The neck and shoulder muscles become strained. This doesn't mean that you should stop using the cross-trainer if you enjoy it - just don't use the handgrips!

Neck and Shoulder pain - Iphone & Nintendo DS

I see a lot of people with neck and shoulder pain. The main cause has been poor posture and being slumped over at the desk eight hours a day, five days a week. Recently I have had clients who have strained their necks and shoulders due to using some very common devices.

PART 1)

The Iphone and Nintendo DS

Yes, this little phone can be a big pain in the neck! I remember when they first came out a few years ago. I had a client who I saw regularly and she told me that she suddenly developed a really tight neck and was having headaches. She had not done anything too strenuous or different since I last saw her. It wasn't til the end of the treatment and she went to call her husband on her new iphone. She told me that it was fabulous and that she used it to surf the net, send mail, play games. Aha! This poor lady had been slumped over this little device for hours each day, chin down on her chest, tapping away with one hand. The result of this is that the chest and neck muscles at the front shorten, the shoulder muscles are stretched. keep yourself in one position too long and all sorts of pain arise.

Recently I have seen younger clients with this iphone syndrome (my own name for this condition). One was an 11yr old girl who was in so much pain that I could barely touch her when her mother brought her in for a treatment. She was having to take panadol forte for headaches daily! She was spending a lot of time on her home computer, her Nintendo DS, and also her mother's iphone! Triple the pain! I could only advise her mother to gently massage her daily and apply a heat pack to help calm the pain down.

I myself have been a victim of the iPhone syndrome. Playing Angry Birds on it! So I do understand how easy it is to injure yourself. Lucky I know how to fix myself up. Anything that puts you into that chin-down to chest, arms having to reach forward position will create a lot of neck and shoulder pain.

I can only suggest reducing the usage of these devices (I know nobody will do this) or position yourself very well when using them.

I am always telling my little girl to lie back on some cushions (so her head is supported) and placing her arms on another cushion to raise her Nintendo DS to eye height. This has helped a lot in reducing her neck pain.

Green Massage - A eco friendly massage?

Environmently friendly massage in Melbourne? Does anybody think about a “green” massage here in Australia? Who cares about a eco friendly massage? The energy prices and water prices are soaring in Australia and make my little business more and more expensive to run. But you still want to I thought I give it a shot and look at some eco friendly improvements to my little massage clinic in Doncaster East, Vic.

More and more people are interested in living their lives in an environmentally friendly way. So I looked at a lot of different eco websites (for example www.ata.org.au) and tried to get as much information as possible how to convert my massage clinic in Doncaster East, Melbourne into a more environmentally-conscious business.

Today, evidence of environmental awareness is everywhere but there are no existing standards to classify a massage clinic environment friendly. So I just applied some common sense. Making the effort to transform my massage practice into and eco-friendly business may not seem to be enough to make a big difference ... but as always it starts with each individual to contribute their part.

We checked our energy (electricity & gas), water, chemicals and the products we use. We identified the following 6 things which are already incorporated at our massage clinic.
We know that there is far more that we can do - but it’s a start :-).

1. Massage Towels
For every massage we need a lot of clean, fluffy towels. There are a lot of tips on the Internet to use cold water for washing. We do this already for our private clothes. But for a professional massage clinic. Hot water and a hot dryer are necessary to kill any infectious organisms. So what else could we do?

a) We got some new energy efficient appliances. The top loader had was replaced with a modern 5-star front loader.
b) Hang the washing on the line and use the dryer only for 30min to get fluffy towels.
c) We use the electricity night tariff. This means our washing machine and dryer usually runs at 11pm.

3. Water consumption
Washing all these massage towels uses a lot of water - even in our very efficient front loader. But there is a way to reuse the water in the garden. We installed a grey water system with the effect that we do not need to water our garden at all - even in a very hot summer. All the water gets reused by my plants. We also connected the shower and the bathtub to the grey water system. A great way of reusing water.

3. Biodegradable washing powder
As a positive side effect of the grey water system is that you have to use biodegradable washing powder which contains no phosphates. This is necessary that the plants survive. We do not use the grey water system in winter to give our plants some regeneration time.

4. Lights
It is amazing how much energy a little business like ours can use. There were a lot of old 50W downlights installed in my massage clinic & house. In total we had 32! Thirty-two! 1600W! We slowly started to convert them to energy efficient LED lights (3W - 9W) or lower wattage halogen lights (20W). When one of the old light bulbs is damaged we replace them with new efficient light bulbs. We also fitted some low energy fluorescent lights where possible.

5. Solar System
We also looked into green energy from our electricity provider. All the offers we checked did not really convince us that it makes sense to pay a little more and receive green energy. How could we be sure that we really get green energy? We couldn’t! So we decided to put a small solar system on our roof. This would produce enough energy to offset our usage in the massage clinic. 100% renewable energy!
The system will not pay itself back totally (we look at 8 years at current electricity prices) as we use too much energy within the day and can’t feed much back into the grid.

6. Massage oil products
A lot of people are allergic to certain chemicals and have skin irritations. Since the body absorbs chemicals through the skin, using best organic massage oils and creams are a must for an eco-friendly massage. We only use premium quality coconut oil which is extracted from fresh organically grown coconuts. The extra virgin coconut oil is produced using the Direct Micro Expelling (DME) process. Visit the Boulevard in Ivanhoe East in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for a free Christmas experience. A great little trip for the whole family. The Melbourne residents of the Boulevard in Ivanhoe East take a lot of effort to decorate their houses with wonderful christmas lights. More than 100,000 Melbournians visit the street every year before christmas. The best christmas lights display in Melbourne.

The Boulevard Lights has been running for over 60 years, with the residents of The Boulevard and surrounding streets decorating their houses, gardens and windows with colourful Christmas lights. As well as the great lights displays, there will be entertainment from a variety of choirs and musical groups, and refreshments available along the way.

Just get off Burke Road Exit on the Eastern Freeway and park your car close by. Walk down the street for the best experience - don’t drive just through the street. I suggest arriving at around 8:15pm. You get easily a car park and it is not so busy yet. Usually the council also runs a shuttle bus from Ivanhoe train station.

The lights are on display every year before christmas. The display is open in 2010 between Saturday, 11 December to Thursday, 23 December from 8.30pm - 11pm.

More info:
Banyule Council
Wikipedia

Our christmas giveaway ... 1 full hour free massage

It’s nearly 1st December and everybody will be counting down the days to Christmas. My legs were not happy. I had suffered shin pain, calf pain, ankle instability, foot pain. I was only doing it in order to gain some needed continuing education points as a requirement to remain with my myotherapy association. The presenter was a physiotherapist named Phillip Brownrigg. I learned a lot.
He talked sense. He started off by telling us of how he used to make and sell orthotics, lots of them. That was until he realised that they weren't necessary. My thoughts exactly. I always thought it was unnatural for people to be reliant on these things. Now someone who was an expert in that field confirmed it.

Phillip went on to say that people are born knowing how to walk correctly. They just learn to walk incorrectly by watching others (parents, siblings). Incorrect walking results in back, hip, leg, ankle and foot pain. Phillip now teaches people how to walk correctly.

The correct way of walking is as follows:

1) Heel hits the ground
2) Roll along the outside of your foot to the ball of your little toe
3) Roll along the balls of your toes to the ball of the big toe then push off.

Easy as that.

Most of us will be walking on the outside or the inside of our feet which puts unnecessary strain on different parts of our body. Just take a look at the bottom of the shoes you wear the most and see where it is worn out the most. That is where all your weight is going. If your shoes are worn out evenly, then you are walking correctly.

Only a short while later of practising the correct way of walking, I threw out my half orthotics. I have not suffered my normal leg pains. I enjoyed running more.

Years later I am still walking correctly. It's quite natural now. I have even developed a nice little arch in both feet! I advise a lot of clients on how to walk correctly as part of my treatment. Those that listen do feel the benefits.

Amazon Kindle - eBook reader

Sometimes it is great to relax and read a good book.

I recently bought the third generation of the Amazon Kindle to read my books. The most I was managing to do was a walk once a week and found it a struggle going up hills!

So, in an effort to get back on the road to fitness, I gather a group of girlfriends who had also not experienced Zumba yet and headed for a class. I was very curious to see what many females were raving about. It involved music and dancing - it must be good. I am not ready to hit the gym or do anything else that is specifically designed as an exercise. Zumba may be the answer. I had attended a couple of salsa classes and loved it! I was even slightly good at it. This was going to be a breeze.
So I stand at the back of the class with my equally nervous friends. It's an all female night.

The instructor turns on the music and starts us off on some easy first moves. Hey, so far so good. Second song comes on and the instructor starts shaking her hips like Shakira. She's good. The moves get harder and I am reminded of my horrid experiences with aerobics in the past where I couldn't keep up with the moves. I vividly remembered a gay instructor addressing me personally, via his headset microphone, to please keep up and move in the right direction!

So I shook my hips and shimmied my way as Shakira-like as I could through the rest of the class. I looked around me to see if I was the only uncoordinated one there. No. There were a few who were really good at it but the majority were there just as bad as I was. The difference was that they were enjoying it! And why not? There was a bit of salsa, hip-hop, bollywood moves and great music.

The class finishes finally, but not before the instructor gathers us all to the middle of the room to put our hands together and shout - “ZUMBA!”

I have now experienced Zumba and will not be going back for more. My girlfriends enjoyed themselves and one is keen to do more classes. For someone who is good with sports and loves hitting a dance floor, I failed miserably at Zumba.

And after all that hip shaking and twirling, some of my back muscles are crying for help. I need a massage in Doncaster East!

It can also be harmful, especially when the stress is significant or prolonged. Emotional stress or stress from fatigue and over work can be detrimental to our physical and mental wellbeing.

What happens to people who are stressed?

Stress can affect both your body and your mind. Physical manifestations of stress can include headaches, aches and pains and feelings of exhaustion. But not only can they can make us physically sick, stress can result in significant reduction in motivation and mental wellbeing. Stress can also lead to serious mental health issues, especially if it is prolonged. People who are stressed can be irritable, angry and depressed, they can feel lost and overwhelmed and in some cases can be feel suicidal.

Ways to deal with stress

Some handy simple tips for dealing with stress:

•	Take time to look after yourself physically and emotionally
•	Allocate time for thing you enjoy or that make you happy
•	Don’t place unnecessary pressure or expectations on yourself.
•	Make time for friends and family amid other priorities– strong connections with loved ones are good for mental health.
•	Make time for discussion about emotions within your family – make mental health a discussion point without judgment or stigma attached to it.
•	Limit alcohol intake and use of other substances.
•	If you feel your stress levels peaking take a few minutes of time out in a private place to assess the situation.
•	Schedule both personal time for relaxation, and social time for getting involved in group activities.

Places to go for help

Studies show that if people seek out help, some can significantly alleviate issues of distress and negative mental health experiences:
•	Talk to a trusted family member or friend, or a professional such as a GP or Psychologist.
•	Connect with a helpline such as Lifeline’s 24 hour telephone counselling
service – 13 11 14.
•	Utilise online self help resources. A number of organisations offer information and resources about mental health. Find out more or download a self help tool kit at www.lifeline.org.au

What can Souri’s Myotherapy and Massage do for you on Stress Down Day ... ???

How about a relaxing massage just to wind down? Our bodies also produce free radicals (organic molecules responsible for tissue damage, ageing and possibly some diseases) during normal energy production.

As we get older we produce more of these free radicals. CoQ10 is an antioxidant which prevents cell damage due to free radical activity. We produce less CoQ10 as we age. This imbalance leads to a lot of damage in those whose bodies don’t produce enough of CoQ10 and other antioxidants.
CoQ10 is found in high levels within hard-working body tissues, especially in the heart. The level of CoQ10 becomes very low in people who suffer from heart disease, resulting in less energy for the heart to function normally.

It is not possible to acquire enough CoQ10 from diet alone. So, to increase the amount of antioxidants we need, a daily intake of a supplement is required.

Studies have been carried out on the affects of CoQ10 on:

Cardiovascular disease

Diabetes

Gum disease

Cancer

Parkinson’s disease

Migraines

Male infertility

Chronic fatigue syndrome

High blood pressure

Heart surgery

Athletic performance

The studies have shown evidence that CoQ10 is effective on some of these conditions but not all benefits have been conclusively proven. Even if taken in high doses, there are no known side effects of CoQ10. Therefore it may be worth taking a daily supplement for those with any of the listed conditions, especially those with heart conditions, and to monitor the results.

It would be a good idea to seek medical advice before taking CoQ10 as certain cholesterol or blood sugar lowering drugs reduce the effects of CoQ10. The body’s response to warfarin and insulin may be changed by CoQ10 supplementation. CoQ10 is quite expensive compared to most supplements.

What is Remedial Massage?

What is Remedial Massage?

When muscles and tendons become damaged or impaired, knotted and tense or immobile, Remedial Massage provides a healing treatment that can be gentle or strong, deep or shallow.
Remedial massage holistically treats the whole body and traces the discomfort as far as possible back to the original cause, healing both the cause of the disorder as well as the symptoms.

Remedial Massage Technique

It uses several specialised techniques to locate and repair damage and to support and speed up the body's own repair mechanisms. The massage is applied directly to the skin using a lubricating medium, usually oil, which ensures that the muscles associated with the disorder and mobilisation of the joint are deeply penetrated. Passive stretching moves are also used.

Benefits of Remedial Massage

Key benefits of Remedial Massage include: the stimulation to the blood supply allowing toxins in the muscles to be removed; the calming of the peripheral nervous system to ease pain and discomfort; and the toning and relaxing of muscles to improve joint mobility. An improvement to the health of the cells, the repairing of tissues, and the easing of stiffness and tension can also be experienced through therapeutic relaxation.

Muscular and skeletal dysfunctions often treated with Remedial Massage include Fibrositis, Spondylitis, Arthritis, frozen shoulder, muscular cramps, Whiplash, muscular atrophy, sports and dancing injuries.

Remedial massage available at Souri’s Myotherapy & Massage in Doncaster East, Melbourne - Restore Balance to Your Body.

Myotherapy & Massage Gift Vouchers - Feel good this winter.

Need a great present?
